Thanks to England rugby hero, Ben Foden, the rugby union team at The Bishop’s Stortford High School (TBSHS) enjoyed a training session they’ll never forget last week.
Elms BMW Stansted is a strong supporter of sport at TBSHS, and our Group Corporate Sales Manager, Alex Wright, was able to pull some strings to arrange Ben Foden’s visit.
Alex (pictured on the left in the above photo) takes up the story…
Further to our sponsorship of The Bishop’s Stortford High School Sports Team I decided to use BMW’s relationship with the RFU to gain access to one of the England senior rugby union players in order that they could encourage and champion rugby union within the school. After discussing the idea with BMW Group UK Ltd and they put me in touch with the RFU who agreed to send Ben Foden to TBSHS.
The Bishop’s Stortford High School was delighted to welcome England star rugby player Ben Foden to its Jobbers Wood facility on Tuesday (10th December) for a training session with a group of Year 7 students, followed by talk by Ben about his career and what inspired him to play rugby union during and after school. This was followed by a question and answer session and a lasagne tea.
Ben Foden (married to Una [Neé Healey] Foden of pop group The Saturdays) plays for Northampton Saints and England. He plays at fullback or scrum-half, but can also operate on the wing. He scored his first try for England against France in the 2010 Six Nations.
Ben’s visit was organised in conjunction with Elms BMW Stansted who are currently sponsoring the school sports teams and who also provide some sponsorship to the England team.
The boys from Year 7 enjoyed a fantastic training session with Ben, Mr Hale and myself followed by a lasagne (with salad!) tea, and an enthusiastic question and answer session.
Ben patiently signed autographs and posed for photos with the boys before moving on to his next engagement.
Mr Mathew Hale, PE teacher and team coach, said: “This was a great opportunity for some of our Year 7 boys to meet and train with a top-class rugby player. He was an inspiring speaker and we are grateful to our sponsor, Elms BMW Stansted for helping organise the visit. Hopefully Ben will have encouraged some of our young players to work hard and believe in their ability to achieve top-class success.”
